Dear future,

There is quite a bit going on at the moment. We just had a crazy election cycle, a capitol right, a pandemic, and so much more. However, things are looking up. Although Biden is not going to be our saving grace, he is much better than the alternative. With only two weeks in office, he has pretty much done more in that time span than the last four years.

First of all, if we learned one thing in 2020, it’s that we need to trust science and the facts. As I write this, 447,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus since March of last year. If we had a leader who had taken this threat seriously and listened to science, that number could have been far less. If coronavirus is still a lingering thing in the future, follow the rules. Wear a mask. Avoid close contact. You will be happy that you did.

In general, it’s important to think about how your actions will affect the future, especially in terms of the environment. We have been added back to the Paris Agreement, but real change comes from individual citizens. Strides have been made with banning plastic bags and reusable water bottles as well as recycling, but there is still more to be done. One positive that has come out of the pandemic is that people have been channeling their innovativeness and creativity. I think that people will come up with more reusable or recyclable products to slow the toll on the environment.

Lastly, it is important to enjoy the world. We only get so much time with it, and although there are negatives (especially now), it is still a wonderful place. Go out and try new things, and see new places. This is how we actually learn and develop ourselves.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Lucy,

The clock ticks, time passes, and the earth and all of its inhabitants move closer to dangerous boundaries we can dimly discern but cannot see clearly.

Dear Soren,

In this world that is changing before our eyes, I believe that is our task: standing unflinchingly on the side of love, connecting with others, and forging ahead together.

Dear Tara,

I am sitting in a classroom thinking about you. Which is rare for me. I hope that our family has taken some initiative to do something about changing society instead of building robots and large houses.

Greetings 2050 earthling,

Starting in 2015 I committed my life to sustainability.

Dear Son,

I hope with effective action to combat this climate change will we have a better world in the future.

Filha,

Saiba que enquanto eu tiver vida, minha voz não calará para alertar o mal que estamos fazendo agora para as nossas gerações futuras…

dear earth,

I promise those who walked the Earth before me and those who will walk the Earth after me that I will not stand by and let nature slip through my fingers.

Dear Children and Grandchildren,

I see a world full of hope fueled by the desire for change.

Dear Emile and Eloise,

The beauty and majesty of the world of your childhood is as remarkable as the beauty and majesty of mine, but the fragility of your childhood world is so much greater.

To the generation after mine,

But when you encounter that resistance–and you will, regularly–know that you must respond just how we have had to these past 50 years. With love, and sternness, and most of all, courage. Because that is what the resistance fears the most. We who came before you promise that we will do the same while we wait for you. Know that you will never be alone.

Dear Sinchi,

The world is changing and it is happening fast.

To My Grandchildren,

It’s my hope that the following will be helpful as you navigate your futures.  These are the confessions of a climate activist:
