The journey of humanity does not take us to Mars like the world now likes to believe. It takes us home to our true self where there is no separate self. Where we are all one. You know all this. Look after yourself my child, look after your brother, your friends, your children, all the animals and the whole planet. Love them like there is no tomorrow.

Dear child,

You will be 37 now. I hope I’m still around for you. If I am, I will be 64. I hope the world has learned to take it easy. It’s doing everything but that as I write this. You know all about it. The take make waste nonsense. There seems to be no end to the madness of it all. I hope the world has learned how to ‘do nothing’. If I say this now people will think I’m being lazy. They will think I want the government to give me stuff for free. I hope the world has moved on from all that. You know you don’t need anything to be happy. To be fulfilled. I always knew you would make it. And because I knew that, I knew that the world would make it too. I hope you are happy and well. I hope all your friends are happy and well. How is your little brother? He will be 34. These days he is hard to control. I hope he is a bit more tame but not too much. He loves you more than anything else in the world. He kisses you to sleep every night. You kick him all night long and take the blanket from him. He cuddles up next to you. My eyes are welling up. I love you so much. You make the world more beautiful by being in it. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. And don’t give in to the temptations of mediocrity just so you can fit in. You have always fit in. Since the day you were born. I would know. I was there. Your mother put you on her breasts and you drew first milk with your eyes closed. You were a natural. You were amazing at everything you wanted to do. You loved people for who they were. You cried for people’s pain. You laughed with them. The world just went and got a little lost and you did all you could to stay sane. Stay beautiful. Stay human. Yes we humans have had it rough in the past. Killing off our cousin species and most of the animals. But you knew there was more to being human than the sum total of the past. You were and still are the beginning of beginnings.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to switch from “light” to “deep” green.

Dear Valentina & Luis,

You both know I have made it my mission to get people to understand more about the state of our planet‘s climate and what was at stake.

Meus filhos,

Devemos conservar nosso planeta. Mas, para se fazer isso, temos que fazer isso juntos. Todos os seres humanos devem estar voltados para cuidar bem do lar em que vivemos e do presente que Deus nos deu para viver: a Terra.

I pledge to use less plastic.

Dear Potential Future Kiddo,

To think that my choices of sustainable commuting, eating a plant based diet, and working on our City’s zero waste program likely pale in comparison to the impact of not having a baby is nothing short of devastating.  Does it make me a bad environmentalist to honor my maternal instincts?

I promise to plant trees and to turn off the lights.

My Mini & Lou,

Since I first sat down with these words, a pandemic has erupted. Racial violence is reaching a fever pitch and protests are raging across the nation. It feels like the planet is succumbing to entropy, slipping further into chaos. But I write to you from a time of shifting tides.

Dear Annie and Eric,

I hope that this life of good things is not just yours to enjoy, but that you also have decided to fight for others to have this life, too.

Dear Corey,

I promise to do all within my power to create a world that’s safe for you and your generation.

To My Future Nephews,

I want you to see those corn fields in the north, the beautiful beaches down in Florida, and the stars in the woods at night.

Dear Jack,

Right now you are only a little over 5 weeks old, but you have truly changed my whole world. Your Mom and I always say that we thought we loved before you were born, but now that you have come into the world and we met you, our ability to love just expanded exponentially.

Dear future generations,

Young people are making a lot of noise and politicians are now listening.
