Dear Brother,

Well, right now our society is at a turning point. Climate change is becoming more and more talked about and spread around, but it’s more of a political debate than where it really needs to be. That point is people taking action to mitigate and adapt to this problem. I have hope, and I really hope you have been able to sustain a family and work at a job you love – don’t focus on the money.

My promise to you is that I’m going to focus on what I love, my family, and speaking out for what’s right. It might have gotten really bad for you: less food, less clean water, and impacts on every part of your life. Just know, it’s not your fault. Please don’t put blame on yourself. As long as you’ve done what is comfortable for yourself, you’ve done great.

You’re going to get through this. Focus on the good in the bad situations. The world is full of bad, but if you focus on the goods it will get a lot easier on yourself and your family. I will do all I can to help you and your generation live a better life. I don’t know exactly what that is yet, but I know I’ll find it. I love you.

-Jaret

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tom and Leena,

I want you to only see the beauty in this world; there is so much of it and I will protect this beauty for as long as I am here on this Earth.

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

Dear Ryan,

I hope that you start doing things that will help the world.

To my Children,

As you look through your window, I hope you will see a bright future. I hope you dream big, and that you have the courage, drive, and fortitude to do everything you can to achieve those dreams.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to clean the earth.

To my children – Chase, Maya and Harlan

I hope that we manage to change the system really soon, while there is still time. So that you are not left with the mess, and trying to fix something that you didn’t cause. I hope we figured out a way to be kind, and caring for others who will suffer more than us. A way to let go of the greed and look at ways we can help others rather than take from them.

Dear Great Grandchildren,

If you are reading this, you probably inherited my fascination with ancestry, and the way it uncovers incredible stories of unlikely survival.

My darling girls,

I can be brave enough to wake up.

To my daughters,

In order for you two be happy and healthy, we all need to work hard to prevent climate change.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise my next vehicle will be an EV.

Dear Kai and Leah,

I want you to feel awestruck like I do. It is important to feel small sometimes, to feel the weight of reality, to recognize the scale of a challenge, to see where you fit and what you are up against. This is the case with climate change.

For my most dear and only daughter,

And I know life more fully because of you whom I live on through.
