Dear Birds,

I know it’s tough right now. You’re breeding and overwintering habitats have diminished in sized and quality. Your migration routes are filled with roadblocks and hazards, like glass windows and wind turbines. You can thank humans for all of this with a well timed poop.

But…

That still won’t stop me – a human – from working my hardest to make your lives better. I will continue championing land preservation and the restoration of woodland, prairie and wetland habitats. I will not stop advocating for “bird friendly” legislation to make cities safer for your passage. I will monitor your populations and take hints from you when something is wrong and when things are going right.

You, individually, will probably not be around in 2050. But I am hopeful that your descendants will be. I am confident that, in their birdy-poop ways, your descendants will be there to acknowledge all the hard work, dedication and passion that I promise to put in over the next 28 years and beyond.

Keep your beaks up my feathered friends. We’ll get there together!

More Messages to the Future

To my brother’s children,

We wondered about how we might be able to eliminate plastics from our day to day routines, and recycled literally everything. We were amazing, you should have seen us. Now and again though, we wondered if these were the right questions.

To my grandchildren’s children,

I became an activist to be part of a force to save the natural world and go 100% clean energy.

Dear Nova and Remi,

I wish for you both that another kind of life has been discovered, one of peace, moderation and concern for all life.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to put in a rain catcher tank.

Hi buddy,

I can now see that the solutions are there, that a transition of the magnitude that is needed, is possible.

For my children,

If we haven’t done enough and the world you’re living on is apocalyptic or if you’re living on another planet then I’m deeply sorry and just know that I believe in you and I know that you are both strong and smart enough to handle anything.

Dear You Tomorrow,

What we failed to do, at least early on, was to see how important it was to put those solutions together. To combine into a way forward.

Dear Finley,

I wonder if in 2050 we will be looking at a future where fear from the changes at hand has caused people to hate rather than love and provide hope. Perhaps in that world we will we no longer comprehend the biblical texts in a meaningful way. Will climate change be the end of the epoch of God?

Dear Tomorrow,

My climate promise is to use a refillable bottle, bring my own resusable spoon/form wherever I go, use clean personal care products (without chemicals).

Dear Chay and Kate,

Don’t ever let anyone tell you your actions don’t matter. Every single thing you do matters. You matter.

Our Shared Promise

I will act today so you may have a healthy earth to live on.

Dear Child,

Hope we get to have that snowball fight I always dreamed we’d have.
